Welcome to MKT 3356

Hello Everyone,

               I would like to welcome ya'll to MKT 3356, Marketing in the Networked Economy. While the name sounds ethereal, the objective of this class is pretty straight forward: we will learn the intricacies of  social media marketing. So why did I label this class as such? Well, in my opinion, the term 'social media marketing' is a misnomer. It is like saying 'Television Marketing' or 'Radio Marketing'. It doesn't make any sense does it?

              The modern media, especially the Internet and the associated technologies have made the world increasingly interconnected. Now, traditional social networks are on steroids, and this has tremendous implications for marketers. In this class, we will explore the changing media landscape, and with it, the marketing landscape. What does social media mean to marketers? How does consumer-generated media and networks change the ways in which consumers live, look for information, connect with others, and more importantly, shop? How do various components of the so called "social media" fit into the marketing puzzle? These are some of the topics we will explore in this class.

              This is a truly democratic class. The students i.e., 'YOU' need to play a major role in determining its direction, content and delivery. I aka the instructor will be merely a facilitator. We won't start with a fixed syllabus and make up things as we go along. More in the fashion of crowd sourcing. Lets see how things go. Any inputs are more than welcome- inputs related to the content in this class, any interesting activities that can add value to the class etc etc. Your comments are always welcome.
